Main therapy types used in Med Minds’ Toolkit

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a psychotherapeutic approach that focuses on addressing the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.  It aims to help individuals identify and modify negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies.

This leads to positive changes in their feelings and actions.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, without judgment or attachment to thoughts or emotions. It involves cultivating awareness and acceptance of one’s experiences.

This can lead to reduced stress, improved focus, and increased overall well-being.

Mindfulness Based CBT (MBCT)

MBCT combines the principles of CBT with mindfulness practices. It helps individuals become more aware of their thoughts and emotions, allowing them to develop a non-judgmental and accepting attitude.

It leads to better management of stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a form of psychotherapy that encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and emotions rather than trying to eliminate or suppress them, while also committing to actions aligned with their values.

It emphasizes mindfulness, psychological flexibility, and the development of a more meaningful life.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

CFT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that emphasises the cultivation of compassion and kindness toward oneself and others.

It aims to address and alleviate self-criticism, shame, and difficulties related to self-worth, promoting emotional healing and well-being through the cultivation of self-compassion and empathy.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a therapeutic approach that combines elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy with mindfulness techniques. It is specifically designed to help individuals who struggle with emotional dysregulation, self-destructive behaviours, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

It achieves by focusing on building skills in emotional control, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and effective communication.

Combination Therapies

Combination Therapies refer to the utilisation of multiple therapeutic approaches or techniques to address a person’s specific needs and challenges.

By combining different therapies, such as CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches, individuals can benefit from a comprehensive and tailored treatment plan that addresses various aspects of their wellbeing.

Where necessary, to combine therapies is really one of my skills and great passions.

Single Session Therapy (SST)

Single Session Therapy (SST) also known as ‘brief therapy’, is a therapeutic approach that aims to address a client’s concerns and achieve meaningful results – all within a single session.

SST often lasts typically 60 to 90 minutes, emphasizing efficient and focused interventions.
